Paws4Vets and Wounded Warrior Project Team to Provide Service Dogs for Veterans in West Virginia

The Wounded Warrior Project® [www.woundedwarriorproject.org ] and the paws4peoleTM foundation [www.paws4people.org], in Strategic Partnership, announce the creation and implementation of:
The paws4vetsTM Program, a Morgantown, WV based, unique and dynamic, K-9 centered, recovery/intervention program for Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This program primarily uses dogs rescued from shelters prior to their being euthanized.
The AfghanDogZTM Program, a Morgantown, WV based, program designed to bring dogs from the war zone in Afghanistan to the United States. These dogs were adopted by American soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Some soldiers are able to bring the dogs they adopted home (to the U.S.) while others are not. These remaining dogs then become available to the AfghanDogZ Program.

In both programs, the dogs are placed into the paws4prisonsTM [www.paws4prisons.org] K-9 Training Program at US Penitentiary – Hazelton, Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Here, the dogs are rehabilitated and taught basic/advanced obedience skills by the federal inmates in the paws4prisonsTM K-9 Training Program.
Upon the dog’s graduation from training they will be placed with selected Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
The paws4prisons K-9 Training Facility is located at the United States Penitentiary - Hazelton (USPH), Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. The paws4prisons program has a 22-month track record of providing selected Federal inmates with K-9 training skills and their practical application of those skills to train Assistance Dogs.
In the first 22-months of operation (April 2007 – February 2009), the paws4prisons program, USPH, Bruceton Mills, WV, has trained, placed and/or certified 17 dogs; including five certified Service Dogs, three certified Educational Assistance Dogs, a certified Rehabilitative Assistance Dog, and eight privately placed Community Dogs. This includes seven dogs saved from euthanasia.
The current paws4prisons Program was expanded, modified and adopted to fit the needs of Veterans, thus paws4vets. When a Veteran accomplishes the training protocols he/she will leave the paws4vets program with either a Rehabilitative Assistance Dog or a Service Dog. There are currently four Rehabilitative Assistance Dogs and one Service Dog awaiting placement in the paws4vets Program, with more being added to the training program weekly.
The paws4vets program and the paws4people Foundation are supported in large part by online charity raffles.
